New T-Shirt!

Whoa - long time, no post! Busy is good though. The painting below is now avaliable on a T-shirt. It can be purchased locally (if you live in Halifax) or online through the Fresh Prints website: http://www.freshprintshalifax.com/

I was in Montreal for 9 days late October for my first solo show there 'Obsolete Idols' which went well. (Will post some photos of the opening at a later date). After that was 'Hal-Con' - Halifax's first Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Comic Convention. I had a vendor table and sold prints and original drawings. Thank you for everyone that attended and bought work.
Upcoming: Tuesday December 7th at the Seahorse in Halifax: 'SPECTRUM', group show featuring the work of myself along with Nick Brunt, James Farrell, Justin Lee and Mark MacAulay.

revised

This is a revised painting I did back in December for the 'Select Start' videogame art show. I wanted to push the colors and values as it felt unfinished to me for awhile. Compare it to the one I did and posted 5 months ago - you'll see.
BIG ART SHOW in the works for the month of August. Stay tuned for more details.

Champions of Breakfast

Here's the painting I did for the 'Champions of Breakfast' show at the Paragon this past Tuesday. I wanted it to look like a mock up UFC poster. I like the cheesey wresling names I gave them.
'Ultimate Breakfast Championship', 20" x 24", acrylic on wood panel

Music Totem

'Music Totem'
acrylic on wood panel
8" x 24"

This is a new age totem pole design I did with a music theme, based on traditional native imagery. If you venture to the Paragon Theatre you will see this same design painted on a table (above). If you still haven't made it to the Paragon Theatre, the perfect time to go is this TUESDAY NIGHT APRIL 20th: for the 'Champions of Breakfast' (cereal mascot) Art show! Show starts off at 9:00pm - you don't even need to be an early riser! Eat your sugar filled artificially flavored cereal of choice and see you there!

'A part of our heritage'

This was the last painting I did for my show at the Paragon Theatre last month all dealing with an enviromental theme. The idea for it was actually floating around in my head for about six years before I finally sat down and painted it. 'Now, the people will know we were here.' , acrylic on wood panel, 12" x 24"

Join me the evening of Tuesday April 20th at the Paragon Theatre for 'Champions of Breakfast' (the cereal mascot art show)! Another fun filled sugar frosted group show you won't want to miss! See you there!

80's Cartoon Art Show!

My contribution to the '80's Cartoon Art Show' that happend at the Paragon Theatre this past Tuesday night. If you missed the show - good news: it has been extended and will be up unil the 19th of April! There are still many works availible (including the one above) so take a look.
My friend and photographer, David J. Crew captured the excitement of the opening and posted the photos he took online. You can see them here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/djcrewe1/sets/72157623738423748/
'Smurf Days'

Cafe Creeper

THIS TUESDAY (March 30th) is the '80's Cartoon Art Show' at the Paragon Theatre! Myself and 7 other artists have painted some of your favorite childhood characters. Fine Art + 80's nostalgia - what could be better? Also this is the LAST WEEKEND to see all the works of mine currently on display and for sale at the Paragon. Come to one of their show and check out the work while you're there. (www.theparagontheatre.com for more info)

Only WHO can prevent forest fires?

I was going for sort of a Hanna-Barbarra/Yogi Bear look on this one.
'Hypocrite', acrylic on wood panel, 8" x 24"
I originaly planed to have Smokey UNintentionally burn down the forest behind him turning around in shock, but I thought it would be more amusing to have him fully aware of the enviromental damage he caused. What if animals had the same disregard for the earth that humans do? We'd be in a lot of trouble!

Lady Smurfette

This is the painting I painted live at the Paragon Theater for my opening last Saturday. I suspected a Lady Gaga Smurfette would be a fun challenge. This painting is still for sale. Contact me if you wish to buy it: doironjono@yahoo.ca
'Lady Smurfette', acrylic on plywood, 29" x 42"

I based the dress off the one she's wearing in this photo becasue it already resembled the one Smurfette wears. (I have no idea what the occasion was for.)
I wanted the final painting to resemble a poise Lady Gaga would actually do. The sketches above were drawn while watching her 'Just Dance' video.

Sad Unicorn

This is the final painting I did for the Economy Shoe Shop Show. TODAY and TOMORROW are the LAST DAYS to see the work if you still haven't. The idea for this painting came from a converstion with another artist I admire when he jokingly stated unicorns were not fit to paint. The painting was floating around in my head for about two and a half months before I was able to paint it and it SOLD before I even hung it up on the wall! 'Sad Unicorn', acrylic on wood panel, 9"x12"

Join me the evening of SATURDAY MARCH 6th 2010 for the opening of my month long show at the Paragon Theatre! (http://www.theparagontheatre.com/) That evening, I'll be presenting my new work and later making a very special painting LIVE to the audience! Included in that show are a series of brand new never before seen paintings all related to an enviromental theme. See you there!

Halloween Sweethearts

This is one of the new Valentine's Day themed paintings I did for my Shoe Shop Show. It is of course based on one of the most influential animated films of all time: 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'.
'Halloween Sweethearts', acrylic on wood panel canvas, 10" x 12"

If you haven't seen the show yet at the Economy Shoe Shop, this coming week is the last full week to see it. Also, I will be painting at the Paragon this Tuesday night for the 'Dead Celebrity Record Show' - see you there!

The Hug-A-Tron 5,000!

The name says it all! A robot specifically designed to relinquish your emotionally repressed needs! Isn't technology great? Buy one today and never be hugless again!

The robot is a homage to Robby the Robot from the movie 'Forbidden Planet'. I based the backlighting from the movie poster 'The Thing'. I've never seen the move, but one of my favorite movie posters ever made. I've gotten more comments on this painting then I ever would have anticipated…
Acrylic on wood panel canvas, 9"x 12".

The Zodiac show this past Tuesday (Jan. 19th) combined the talents of 12 different artists patinting the full Zodiac live before your eyes. It was a blast! Thanks to all the people who came out to the show.

I did the sign 'Leo' (although my actual sign is 'Pieces'). The original painting I did has been sold and unfortunately, I don't have a photo of the finished product. Here it is about three-quarters of the way done. Photo by Stoo Metz: http://whostolemybike.com/uag/artists/Stoo-Metz

True Faces - Fast Food

Happy New Year! Thank you very much to all the people who came to my art shows in 2009, provided encouragement, bought artwork and made the year a success. You're the reason I continue to pursue this lifestyle. This past year, I made a total of 44 paintings, 1 mural, 20 combined shows and apperances (2 of them solo shows) and numerous sold paintings, drawings and prints. I also managed to update this blog every week with something new. I already have shows in the works for 2010. The info to the next one I'm involved in is below:
