Reservoir DOGS

Just for fun, I thought I would re-design the four main characters from the film 'Reservoir Dogs'. There was two things I wanted to achieve with this project and the first was: I didn't want to take four random dogs and dress them up in suits. Since these characters are based on real actors, the designs should resemble them. Secondly, (but more importantly) I wanted to create appealing designs.

Below are some of the roughs.

This was actually the first sheet I did. Just trying to figure out ways to contrast each character in thier most basic shapes. Note the differences in height, waist, shoulders and various head shapes. I also was looking though dog books at this time and figured out what breed of dogs each character should be.

Rat Creature Run Revised

This is a revised (albeit, rougher) Rat Creature run cycle from the previous video. I took the constructive criticism from Ryan Cole and strengthened the keys and changed the spacing. One problem supporting the timing problems I was having, is that I did not realise at the time the default Flash setting (on my home computer) is 12fps instead of 24fps. (The previous video is slower than it should be, but still needed some impovement anyway.)

Rat Creature Run

BONE is a well drawn and well written epic graphic novel and I finally got the chance to read the whole story while I have some time off. I really liked Jeff Smith's (the creator of BONE) design of the Rat Creatures and wanted to give animating one of them a try. This is a quick run cycle I did with one of those characters.

Work Doodles!

Here is a collection of drawings I did at the studio during the past 5 1/2 months when I should have been working (don't tell the boss!).

Remember kids: watch 'Johnny Test' EVERY Saturday and Sunday on Teletoon! (Check your local listings.)

This sketch is of two characters of my own I've been working on for a couple months (more to come soon). Elaborately drawn one day when our server crashed.

(I'm not so sure about this licking the floor pose. Afterall, it is supposted to be a kid's show...)

Public Gardens

This is a painting I did for my sister and her fiance. Now that she's happily married, I can finally post it. The scene is of the Public Gardens in Halifax. A beautiful spot if you ever visit.
Medium is Gouache. (Sorry that it is not a better photo, the painting was too big for my scanner.)

New Website!

Well, it's been quite a while since my last post... I've had plenty to keep me busy, including a new Website. Here is the link if you are interested: http://animationnb.com/2007/jdoiron/
(There is plenty of new artwork on it, including some of my Animation work.) Enjoy!

I drew these while I was waiting to get my hair cut on Saturday.

Dainty & Snide

My first crack at nailing down the details of the two characters in an organised model sheet.

Although, it wasn't a landmark film, "Nails" the spider from the film "Cool World" is definitely one of my favorite cartoon characters of all time. Recently, I watched the film "Christmas in Tattertown" (another Bakshi production) and there is a character in it whom I am sure was the precursor to Nails. This page was drawn under that influence.

Character Development

There is a certain kind of energy that arises when you search for what you want to say on paper. I challenge myself to draw as much as I can on a single page to maintain that energy and improve my previous design.
