YES Montreal - Business Skills for Creative Souls confrence

Coming up on Monday March 14, YES Montreal asked me to be one of the presenting artists who will also be giving a brief talk at their upcoming Business Skills for Creative Souls conference. I've been benefiting from YES's services since I arrived in Montreal in July 2012 and am flattered to be involved with it this year.

If you are an emerging artist, attending this event IS A MUST to learn more about the business side of what you do! You can find more details about the event here: http://yesmontreal.ca/en/artists/events/yes-arts-conference-expo

Ergonomics for artists

Something that is not talked about enough in art making is ergonomics. You want to sit in a comfortable chair, keep your back straight, get up and stretch periodically... Among those things, you also want to guard your wrists. Before a drawing session or when I get up in the morning, I like to use these adjustable hand squeezers and do a couple sets. Start from a low pressure level and work your way up. These help warm up my wrists and get all the 'kinks' out.  (And as a bonus - you'll build up some forearm strength!)

Alphonse Mucha book

Saddened I must return this Alphonse Mucha book that I've been selfishly renewing from the library. Admittedly, I was only previously familiar with his posters (which I also love), but his murals are now my favorite. His work is an unparalleled achievement of deep emotional narrative. His staging is also beyond impressive.

If you are unfamiliar with him, you can watch a 6-part documentary on him here via YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU5gCPQaW3g&list=PL43A0144BA35CEA62

Steal like an Artist - buy this book!

This book has been making it's rounds for a while and is deserving of more praise. (I picked it up 3 weeks ago and read it in one sitting.) A wonderful, accessible, digestible read with so many great takeaways. Among my favorites: 'Validation is for parking'.

New Brow: Contemporary Underground Art

Montrealers: coming to Cinema du Parc one month from today - 'New Brow: Contemporary Underground Art'! I've generously received permission to organize another screening of this documentary and will do so alongside an art show featuring local talent who's work will compliment the film. You can find out more info about the film here: http://newbrowfilm.com/index.htm

The film is also on my list of MUST SEE art documentaries. To see the list, click here: http://www.jonodoiron.blogspot.ca/2013/01/art-documentaries.html

Brilliant and hilarious marketing campaign by advertising firm Team Detroit for College of Creative Studies based in Detroit. I love this SO MUCH. Proof that humor is a successful advertising weapon.
