Up Your Arson!

In celebration of Earth Day this past April 22, I made this painting as a satiric look at animals retaliating against human encroachment. 

"Burn down my home, 'an I'll burn down yours!" 

 Smokey, NO! 

And who's his accomplice? 

Woodsy the owl! YES, the "Give a hoot, don't pollute" owl! And what's he doing?? LITTERING! 

The level of disrespect for residential property in this painting is appalling. It's also jesting one of cinema's most painfully prolific cliches: tough guys walking away from explosions. (Yes, I know about the Lonely Island song on that topic, I've seen it - thank you.) 

As harsh as their retaliation may be, a lesson needs to be learned here, folks. It's like that famous Ghandi quote: "A burned down home for a burned down home makes the whole world a giant f#€%!&@ pile of ash." I think he said that when he took the stage at Woodstock. (If I remember correctly... ) 

Anyway... buy this painting or I'll burn down your home.

TALES OF THE MUNDANE

THANK YOU everyone who attended the opening last night! If you weren't able to make it, the exhibition runs until February 28th at Galerie Abyss.

My piece for the show is called 'TALES OF THE MUNDANE'. The painting is about a life of unseized potential and the dangerous lure of complaisance.

Visually, the piece is an obvious parody of the famous 'TALES FROM THE CRYPT' comic book header. Mundane is not a frightening word ...until you really think about it - mundane is a slow uneventful death. I like how the horror font contrasts the seemingly unrelated text. I had a lot of fun building the textures on the painting and making it look like an aged, frayed, moldy comic book that's been sitting in someone's damp cellar for 40 years. Those textures represent neglect and the inescapable passage of time.

 

Yoda says...

So here's something I can share with you all now: this past Sunday November 9th, David, one of my best friends growing up, married the woman of his dreams. I was unable to attend the wedding in person in Australia, but I DID send this little doozie half way around the world to the newly wed Star Wars fans.

 Although it resembles an internet meme the piece was actually inspired by famed Illustrator James Mongomery Flagg's famous 1917 'I WANT YOU' United States army recruitment poster. (Yoda's quote also seemed like suitable advice for any married couple.)

Brilliant and hilarious marketing campaign by advertising firm Team Detroit for College of Creative Studies based in Detroit. I love this SO MUCH. Proof that humor is a successful advertising weapon.
