Happy New Year, everyone! 'Creating A Monster' - the last painting I completed in 2015 shortly before the end of the year - is all done! the original will be for sale at the upcoming The Artist Project Toronto from February 18-21.

Creating a monster...

This is the drawing for the painting on the round wood panel I'm creating for The Artist Project Toronto called 'Creating a Monster'. It was inspired by Gumby, playing with Play-Doh as a child, monsters, special effects animation, and the movie 'The Thing' (even though I've never seen the movie).

Using reference for hands

I started my next painting, 'The Devil is in the Details' - one of the paintings left on my list I want to complete before the end of the year.

Here is a tactic that might be helpful to some of you: when you need to draw hands at a tough angle or just need great reference, film yourself with your computer's webcam and try out some different hand positions. Pause it on a suitable frame and then draw from it.

Cookie painting

"Run, Gingerbread people, run!" 

Here is part of the rough drawing for a 'cookie themed painting' I'm working on for an upcoming group show. The final painting (and the rest of the paintings in the exhibition) will all be painted on skateboards! Radical, huh?

THAT LAUGH! - tonal studies

Been juggling a few things at the moment. Here is more progress of the #painting 'THAT LAUGH!'. I'm doing a detailed pencil study of the image first this time. Some of my favorite artists work this way and I had wanted to do one for a while. (The last time I've done a tonal study in pencil, I was in College.)

You may notice I switched up the drawing of Screwy Squirrel (the character on the far left). Showed the image to a friend of mine who suggested all the characters should be laughing as the intent and title suggests - apposed to Screwy who (previously) was repeating a phrase. Thought that made sense, so I redrew him. (You can compare with previous images in the earlier posts below.)

Tonal study in pencil. (Still working on it.) The final drawing will be available for purchase on my online store once the painting is completed.
